What is Information Governance?
Information Governance provides a framework of legal rules and best practice applicable to the processing (handling) of information. This includes information relating to patients, service users and employees, as well as corporate information eg financial and accounting records.
It ensures that the NHS handles all its organisational information, in particular personal and sensitive information, legally, securely, efficiently and effectively, in order to deliver the best possible care.
It forms part of an assurance process which also requires returns to the Department of Health by means of the Data Security and Protection Toolkit.
Training
IG Training offers assurance to our patients, staff and commissioners that the Trust is committed to the provision of a confidential and secure service
It has been a Department of Health mandated requirement for some time that all staff undertake annual information governance training. The Trust is required to evidence that all staff have undergone the training.
The training MUST be undertaken by all staff once in each financial year and can be accessed either:
- Through the E-Learning Web icon on the Zenworks window on the desktop, for both Smartcard users (click on the link to access the training using a Smartcard or via a username/password, the benefit of which is that staff records are automatically updated and link in with Statutory and Mandatory Training
- Using the IG Assessment Paper to undertake the training
When you access your ESR record you will see the two nationally recognised IG Training modules:
- Introduction to Information Governance
- Information Governance: The Refresher Module
New Starters to the Trust must complete information governance training within four weeks of commencing employment with the Trust. This is usually undertaken at the Corporate Induction session.
Current Employees must complete the Information Governance Refresher Module once in each financial year.
STAFF ARE NOT REQUIRED TO COMPLETE THE INFORMATION GOVERNANCE: THE BEGINNER’S GUIDE
Additional training is mandatory for key staff in certain roles, and further information is available from the Information Governance Department.
Using the IG Assessment Paper
The Assessment Paper should be read together with the IG Handbook.
Once you have read the Handbook, complete the assessment paper and return to the Information Governance Department – either by e-mail to ecn-tr.informationgovernance@nhs.net or in the internal post.
The pass mark is 80%.
The Information Governance Department will mark the assessment paper and update your ESR record to show that you are compliant with your training for the year in which the paper is completed.
